Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and it does not begin one thing, it begins three. The wheel starts here, the fire element starts here, and the astrological year starts here, at the spring equinox. This is not simply an energetic sign. It is what starting looks like.
The symbol is a ram, and a ram has one tactic: run at the thing, head down. No ambush, no camouflage, no fallback. Fittingly, Aries is the sign traditionally assigned to the head, the part it leads with.
Aries runs from March 21 to April 19. If your birthday falls on either edge, the boundary can shift by a day depending on the year and your birth time, the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same moment annually.
People born close to either edge often recognise themselves in both signs, and there is a real reason for that: the planets sitting either side of your sun frequently remain in the neighbouring sign, blending the two.
Mars rules Aries, and Mars is widely mislabelled as the planet of anger. It is the planet of will, the moment a want becomes a movement. The whole Aries temperament comes back to that gap being short. Most people feel the impulse, consider it, discuss it, sleep on it. An Aries has already stood up.
Cardinal signs initiate; fire supplies the heat. Leo sustains a fire and Sagittarius carries one around, but Aries strikes it. They do not deliberate their way into readiness, they start, and let the plan catch up. Which is why they are so often first, so often wrong, and far less troubled by the second than by waiting.
Blunt, physical, competitive, and more insecure than he presents. The Aries man moves first and explains afterwards, which reads as confidence and is sometimes impatience in a good coat. He is protective without being possessive.
He responds badly to being handled. Hints and strategic silences fail on him, not because he refuses to engage but because he does not detect them. Say the actual thing and he meets you there.
Direct, quick, and uninterested in being softened for anyone's comfort. The Aries woman knows what she thinks before the question has finished, and has no tolerance for being spoken for.
She is drawn to people who keep up without competing for the wheel. What she will not forgive is being slowed down as a favour: the partner who withholds information to manage her reaction has already lost her.
Aries pursues. That is the honest opening line, and also the trap: the chase is where they are most alive, so the move from wanting someone to having them is where the relationship deepens or quietly deflates.
The ones that last do so because the partner stayed a person rather than becoming a prize. Aries is not fickle, in love they are direct, generous and startlingly unguarded, but they need something to move toward. Give them a shared goal and they stay for decades. Give them a settled arrangement with nothing left to win and they will manufacture friction.
Aries is the person you want on day one and the person you plan around by day ninety. Nobody starts faster, and nobody is more useful when a meeting has stalled and someone has to say the thing the room has spent forty minutes circling.
The signature weakness is the middle: the long flat stretch where work is only work holds no charge for them. They also make expensive enemies without noticing, the offhand remark a colleague never raises again. Pair one with someone patient and administratively minded and it is close to unstoppable.
Fields that suit them: entrepreneurship, sport, emergency services, surgery, sales, the military, anything at start-up stage, anything that rewards whoever moves first.
Here is the irony of the first sign: the constellation is small and faint. Aries has three stars of any real brightness, Hamal, Sheratan and Mesarthim: set in a shallow bent line that looks far more like a hook than a ram.
The brightest is Hamal (Alpha Arietis), an orange giant roughly 66 light years away at magnitude 2.0, its core hydrogen long since spent. Mesarthim has the better story: Robert Hooke resolved it into two stars through a telescope in 1664, one of the earliest double stars ever identified.
It also holds a title it no longer occupies. Two thousand years ago the sun sat in Aries at the spring equinox, which is why that point is still called the First Point of Aries and why this is the first sign. Precession has since dragged the equinox back into Pisces. The name outlived the fact. Best viewed from the northern hemisphere in autumn and early winter.
The diamond is the April birthstone, and the pairing is almost too neat, the hardest natural substance on earth handed to the sign least willing to yield. Older traditions give Aries bloodstone, a dark green jasper flecked with red, and carnelian, the orange stone Roman soldiers wore for courage.
The Aries colour is red in its sharpest register: scarlet rather than burgundy. It comes from Mars, which is red for a reason that suits the sign: the surface is covered in iron oxide. The planet of will is rusting, and still reads as a warning light from millions of miles away.
A telling list: Lady Gaga, Elton John and Maya Angelou all arrived under names they issued themselves, and Chaplin built a character so complete it outgrew him.
If you are buying for an Aries, or you are one, the ram's curled horn makes an unusually good glyph, clean enough to hold at pendant scale, and diamond or carnelian sits well against warm metals. See our zodiac necklace collection for the sign as a constellation, a glyph and an engraved charm.
