Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac and the one that arrives with the invoice. Saturn rules it, and Saturn governs structure, time, limits and consequence, the part of a chart that does not negotiate. Where Sagittarius assumes the horizon is free, Capricorn has priced the trip.
The symbol is a sea-goat: mountain goat above, fish tail below. It is the strangest figure in the zodiac and the most revealing. Everyone notices the half that climbs. Almost nobody is shown the half that lives underwater.
Capricorn runs from December 22 to January 19. If your birthday sits on either edge, the boundary can move by a day depending on the year and your birth time, the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same moment annually.
People born near either edge often recognise themselves in both signs, for a real reason: the planets either side of your sun often stay behind in the neighbouring one. Capricorn also owns the least convenient birthdays in the zodiac, running straight through Christmas. Mention combined presents and watch the jaw set.
Saturn teaches by subtraction. Where Jupiter hands things over, Saturn withholds them until they have been earned, and the whole Capricorn temperament follows from that. This is a sign that expects to be given nothing and organises accordingly. Ambition is the visible result. The invisible cause is an early assumption that nobody is coming to help.
Being a cardinal earth sign explains the rest. Cardinal signs initiate; earth builds in material reality, with costs attached. Together they produce someone who has already broken the outcome into stages with dates against them. A Capricorn rarely announces a goal. You find out they had one when it is finished.
Reserved, capable and faintly older than his age at every stage of life. The Capricorn man holds the practical detail nobody else wanted, the insurance, the booking, the difficult phone call. He is not unemotional. He has concluded that feelings are private, which is a harder problem.
He shows affection by doing rather than saying, and is puzzled when that fails to register. The way in is not pressure but consistency. Turn up repeatedly and unremarkably and the fish tail surfaces, the odd humour, the strange enthusiasms, the softness he guards like classified material.
Composed, unimpressed and quietly running things. The Capricorn woman has been treated as the responsible one since roughly the age of nine, and it has left her with exacting standards and no patience for being underestimated.
She is ambitious without being loud about it, and usually the last in the room to mention her own achievements. What she wants from a partner is competence, someone who runs their own life without supervision. Being needed does not flatter her. It reads as a workload.
Capricorn is slow, and the slowness is not indifference. It is an assessment. This sign treats a relationship as something built over decades, so the entry requirements are steep and the early stages can feel like a polite job interview.
Once they decide, though, they have decided. Capricorn is among the most durable partners in the zodiac, the one that stays through the unromantic middle years, when the story becomes logistics. The risk is mistaking provision for intimacy and funding a life they are barely present in. A Capricorn loved well learns to say the thing instead of paying for it.
Capricorn is the sign most likely to be handed responsibility early and least likely to complain about it. They are good inside institutions, able to read the real power structure rather than the org chart, and patient enough to wait rather than agitate.
The signature strength is stamina. Capricorn wins by outlasting, still there once the enthusiastic people have moved on, still improving the thing by increments nobody is watching. The weakness is underselling. They assume good work speaks for itself, which it conspicuously does not, and can spend years resenting a room that never noticed.
Fields that suit them: management, finance, law, architecture, engineering, medicine, government, and any craft with a long apprenticeship.
Capricornus is one of the faintest constellations in the zodiac, a wide, shallow triangle with a single star brighter than magnitude 3. It is also among the oldest recorded. The Babylonians drew it as a goat-fish, symbol of the god Ea, in the Middle Bronze Age, making it one of the longest-serving images in the human record.
The brightest star is Deneb Algedi (Delta Capricorni), magnitude 2.8 and roughly 39 light years away, close, as stars go. The name is Arabic for "the tail of the goat". Notice what got named. Not the horns. The tail.
Neptune was found in this part of the sky in September 1846, within about a degree of that star, though by the boundaries drawn in the 1920s that patch belongs to Aquarius. Look for it on late summer and autumn evenings in the northern hemisphere, low toward the south. It is not a showy shape. You have to work for it, which is fitting.
Garnet is the January birthstone and the stone most tied to Capricorn: deep red, hard-wearing, carried for centuries by travellers as a stone of safe return. The durability is the point. Garnet is not a delicate gem, and would not suit a sign that was. Onyx and ruby appear on modern lists too.
The Capricorn palette is Saturn's: brown, black and dark green, earth colours in their darkest shades. This is a sign that would rather own one good piece than five adequate ones, and it will notice the clasp.
Three share a birthday: Bowie, Presley and Hawking were all born on 8 January, and the list is short on flash-in-the-pan careers, long on people still improving forty years in.
If you are buying for a Capricorn, or you are one, the sea-goat glyph and the constellation's low triangle both make good pendants, and garnet against gold suits a sign that prefers depth to sparkle. See our zodiac necklace collection for the sign as a constellation, a glyph and an engraved charm.
