Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac and the only one ruled by the Sun. Every other sign answers to a planet or to the moon, bodies that shine by borrowing light. Leo answers to the source. A Leo is not reading the mood of a room; they are setting it.
The symbol is a lion, and the detail most descriptions skip is that lions do relatively little hunting. The lion holds territory, settles disputes and is looked at. Presence rather than pursuit.
Leo runs from July 23 to August 22. If your birthday falls on either edge, the boundary can shift by a day depending on the year and your birth time, the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same moment annually.
People born close to either edge often recognise themselves in both signs, and there is a real reason for that: the planets sitting either side of your sun frequently remain in the neighbouring sign, blending the two.
The Sun rules Leo, and the Sun does not reflect anything. It generates light from its own core and does not stop when nobody is watching. That is the Leo temperament: the warmth is not switched on for company. What Leo wants is not applause exactly. It is confirmation that the light is landing somewhere.
Being a fixed fire sign supplies the constancy. Aries fire is a match strike; Sagittarius fire is always moving somewhere else. Leo fire is a hearth, same heat, same place, for decades. A fixed sign does not change its mind under pressure; it changes slowly, in private, then announces the new position as though it always held it.
Straightforward, warm and more easily wounded than he looks. The Leo man picks up the bill, remembers the detail you mentioned once, and organises what nobody else could be bothered to. He is not subtle about wanting to be admired, which is oddly disarming.
What damages him is being made small in public. Correct a Leo man in front of other people and you spend a week repairing what a private word would have fixed in a minute. Handled carelessly, he goes cold, and fixed signs stay cold.
Direct, generous and entirely uninterested in shrinking. She notices who is being left out of a conversation and pulls them in. She also notices exactly who forgot her birthday.
She is drawn to people who hold their own without competing for the same spotlight. Admiration matters, but the version she wants is specific: being told what she did well, not that she is wonderful. Vague flattery she spots from across a room.
Leo loves at full volume from early on. They declare things, plan things, introduce you to everyone. The misreading is that this is about being adored back. It is closer to the opposite: a Leo in love wants to be the reason someone else's life got better.
They praise as readily as they want praising, which is the part the cliché misses. What they cannot survive is indifference. Criticism they can argue with; being taken for granted goes unmentioned for months and then ends the relationship in one conversation.
Leo needs the work to have their name on it. Less vanity than fuel: a Leo whose contribution gets quietly absorbed into a team output will finish the job, then start looking elsewhere.
The signature strength is carrying a room, holding morale together when a project is going badly, mostly by refusing to look worried in front of anyone. The signature weakness is hearing criticism of the work as criticism of themselves, a Leo defending a bad idea out of wounded pride burns a great deal of everyone's time.
Fields that suit them: performance, teaching, design, sales, hospitality, politics, brand and creative direction, anything where being the visible face of the thing is the job.
Leo is one of the few constellations that genuinely resembles its namesake. Its front half is the Sickle, a backwards question mark of six stars tracing the lion's head and mane; the tail is anchored by Denebola, from the Arabic for "tail of the lion". Once you have found the Sickle you cannot unsee the animal.
The brightest star is Regulus (Alpha Leonis), a blue-white star roughly 79 light years away whose name means "little king". It sits almost exactly on the ecliptic, the path the sun, moon and planets follow, so the moon regularly passes in front of it, a distinction few bright stars share.
Each November the Leonid meteor shower radiates from a point just inside the Sickle, debris from Comet Tempel–Tuttle burning up as Earth crosses its trail. Best viewed from the northern hemisphere in spring, high overhead.
Peridot is the stone most associated with Leo, and the geology suits the sign. It forms deep in the earth's mantle, then arrives at the surface in volcanic rock, and occasionally inside meteorites. It holds its green under candlelight and electric light alike, which earned it the old name "evening emerald". Onyx and citrine appear on modern lists for August birthdays.
The Leo colours are gold and orange, borrowed straight from the ruling planet. Peridot against yellow gold is a warmer, less obvious pairing than the same stone set in silver.
A telling list. Most of these people turned their own name into a logo, and for Chanel, Madonna and Hitchcock the person and the brand ended up the same object.
If you are buying for a Leo, or you are one, the Sickle makes a strikingly clean constellation pendant, and peridot sits unusually well against yellow gold. See our zodiac necklace collection for the sign as a constellation, a glyph and an engraved charm.
