Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac and the exact halfway point. The first six build a self; Libra is where the zodiac turns outward and starts dealing with other people. Libra is not preoccupied with relationships out of neediness, it is the first sign to notice that other people exist as fully as it does.
The symbol is a set of scales, and it is the only zodiac symbol that is neither a person nor an animal. Eleven signs are something alive. Libra is an instrument for measuring, one that only works when someone holds it steady.
Libra runs from September 23 to October 22. If your birthday falls on either edge, the boundary can shift by a day depending on the year and your birth time, the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same moment annually.
People born close to either edge often recognise themselves in both signs, and there is a real reason for that: the planets sitting either side of your sun frequently remain in the neighbouring sign, blending the two.
Venus rules Libra, and Venus governs value, what we find beautiful, and what we will trade for it. In Taurus, Venus's other sign, that shows up as appetite. In Libra it shows up as judgement: a running assessment of whether a room, a sentence or an arrangement is well proportioned, and no rest until it is.
Here is the part most descriptions get wrong. Libra is a cardinal sign: an initiator, in the same category as Aries and Capricorn. That sits badly against the indecisive stereotype, and watching a Libra closely resolves it. They decide about people almost instantly and hold to it for years. It is everything else, the restaurant, the job offer, the paint colour, where they stall.
Easy to like and harder to know. The Libra man is the most reasonable person in the conversation, which obscures the strong preferences he has decided are not worth the friction of stating. Attentive, observant, better dressed than the occasion required.
He wants a partner in the working sense, someone to consult, argue with mildly and plan alongside. He is poor at being alone and knows it. The useful question is not whether he likes you, but whether he chose you or agreed to you.
Warm, precise and more formidable than her manner advertises. The Libra woman notices the unfairness in a situation first and names it last, having spent the gap deciding whether naming it helps.
She keeps her surroundings in order because disorder affects her mood, not to perform taste. And she has a limit. It arrives quietly, and once she decides something is beyond repair she leaves with a composure other people find alarming.
Libra thinks in pairs, which is a strength and a liability in equal measure. They remember what you said, notice the mood shift, plan the thing you mentioned wanting once, and none of it is calculated.
The liability is that a Libra will stay in a mediocre arrangement because ending it requires confrontation, which costs them more than most. They are not, contrary to the label, pathological pleasers, a Libra who thinks something is genuinely unjust starts the argument themselves and is immovable in it.
Libra is more ambitious than colleagues expect. The cardinal quality is there: they start things, build the coalition, get the room to agree. What they dislike is delivering bad news alone, and they will restructure a whole process to avoid it.
The signature strength is negotiation: not winning, but finding the arrangement both sides will sign. Libra holds two opposed positions without collapsing into either, the rarest skill in any room where money is divided. The signature weakness is speed: given a choice with no obviously better option, a Libra burns a week a Capricorn would have burned twenty minutes on.
Fields that suit them: law, diplomacy, design, architecture, human resources, luxury retail, mediation, anything where the outcome depends on two parties agreeing.
Libra's stars were not always its own. For much of antiquity they belonged to Scorpio, forming the scorpion's outstretched claws. The Romans separated them out and gave the region to the scales, an administrative decision that handed the zodiac its only inanimate sign.
The evidence survives in the names. Zubeneschamali, the brightest star, means "the northern claw" in Arabic; Zubenelgenubi, the second brightest, means "the southern claw." The two brightest stars in a constellation of scales are still, by name, parts of a scorpion.
Zubeneschamali is a blue-white star roughly 185 light years away, with one oddity: observers have reported for centuries that it looks faintly green. No other bright star does, and the physics does not really allow it. Best viewed from the northern hemisphere in late spring and summer, low in the southern sky ahead of Scorpio.
Opal is the stone most associated with Libra, and the fit is almost too neat, an opal has no single colour, only the one it shows from where you are standing. Peridot, lapis lazuli and tourmaline also appear on October lists, tourmaline occurring in more colours than any other gemstone.
The Libran colours are pink and pastel blue, both tied to Venus. Neither is loud, which is the point: Libra favours colours that flatter what is beside them rather than colours that compete.
Note how many built a career on knowing exactly how a thing would land before saying it, and saying it anyway.
If you are buying for a Libra, or you are one, the scales make an unusually clean pendant shape, and opal against rose gold plays to everything Venus stands for. See our zodiac necklace collection for the sign rendered as a constellation, a glyph and an engraved charm.
