Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac and the one most obviously in motion. Where the sign before it, Scorpio, goes deep, Sagittarius goes wide. It is the sign of the traveller, the philosopher, the person who asks the question everyone else was too polite to ask.
The symbol is a centaur drawing a bow, and it is the only zodiac sign holding a weapon. That detail matters: the arrow is not aimed at anyone. It is aimed at the horizon.
Sagittarius runs from November 22 to December 21. If your birthday falls on either edge, the boundary can shift by a day depending on the year and your birth time, the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same moment annually.
People born close to either edge often recognise themselves in both signs, and there is a real reason for that: the planets sitting either side of your sun frequently remain in the neighbouring sign, blending the two.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and Jupiter is the planet of expansion, of growth, meaning, luck and excess. Everything about the Sagittarian temperament comes back to that. They want the bigger version: the bigger idea, the longer trip, the more interesting explanation.
Being a mutable fire sign gives them their particular quality of restlessness. Fire supplies the enthusiasm; mutability means it never settles in one place for long. A Sagittarius does not lose interest because they are shallow. They lose interest because they have already extracted what they came for and can see the next thing.
Independent, direct and hard to pin down. The Sagittarius man is usually the one with the plan nobody asked for and everyone ends up following. He is generous with his time and money, deeply uncomfortable with emotional pressure, and far more sensitive than his bluntness suggests.
He commits late and then commits properly. The mistake people make is trying to accelerate that with ultimatums, pressure is the one thing guaranteed to make a Sagittarius man leave.
Frank, funny and allergic to being managed. The Sagittarius woman tends to have strong opinions arrived at independently, a wide social circle she does not much curate, and a low tolerance for performance of any kind.
She is drawn to people who have their own life running in parallel to hers. Possessiveness reads to her as an insult rather than a compliment, and a partner who treats her freedom as a threat will not last.
Sagittarius does not want a supervisor. They want a co-conspirator, someone with their own momentum, who will come along or wave them off without resentment.
In the early stages they are enthusiastic to the point of overwhelming. What follows is a genuine test: can this person hold my interest once the novelty burns off? A Sagittarius who stays is not settling. They have decided this is the most interesting available option, and they will keep choosing it.
Sagittarius performs badly in a box and brilliantly with a mandate. Give them a goal, autonomy and no micromanagement, and they will outrun the brief. Give them a rigid process and they will quietly stop caring.
The signature strength is seeing the whole board, connecting things other people were treating as separate. The signature weakness is the last 10%, where the interesting part is over and only the finishing remains. Sagittarians do best paired with an earth sign who enjoys exactly that part.
Fields that suit them: travel, teaching, law, publishing, journalism, anything international, anything that rewards persuading a room.
Sagittarius sits in one of the richest regions of the night sky, it looks toward the centre of our own galaxy. Its most recognisable feature is not the archer at all but the Teapot, an asterism formed by its brightest stars that genuinely does look like a teapot, spout and all.
The brightest star is Kaus Australis (Epsilon Sagittarii), a blue-white star roughly 143 light years away, marking the base of the archer's bow. The Milky Way appears to steam out of the Teapot's spout, one of the finest sights available with nothing but dark skies and patience.
Best viewed from the northern hemisphere in the summer months, low on the southern horizon.
Turquoise is the stone most associated with Sagittarius, and the pairing is old, turquoise has been a traveller's protective stone across multiple cultures for millennia, which is about as on-brand as a gemstone can get. Blue topaz and tanzanite appear on modern lists for December birthdays.
The Sagittarian colour is purple, tied to Jupiter and its long association with wisdom and expansiveness. Deep blues work for the same reason.
A revealing list. Almost every name on it built a career on saying something out loud that other people were thinking quietly.
If you are buying for a Sagittarius, or you are one, the archer's arrow and the Teapot asterism both make striking pendant designs, and turquoise reads beautifully against gold. See our zodiac necklace collection for the sign rendered as a constellation, a glyph and an engraved charm.
