Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac and the only water sign built in fixed form under a war planet. Cancer and Pisces are water that moves. Scorpio is water held still under pressure, the feeling is not smaller, it simply has nowhere to go.
It is also the only sign with three symbols: scorpion, eagle and phoenix. Not three types of Scorpio but the same nature at different altitudes, the creature that strikes when cornered, the one that climbs high enough to see the whole field, and the one that burns its life down and rebuilds. Most Scorpios recognise all three, from different decades.
Scorpio runs from October 23 to November 21. If your birthday falls on either edge, the boundary can shift by a day depending on the year and your birth time, the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same moment annually.
People born close to either edge often recognise themselves in both signs, and there is a real reason: the planets either side of your sun frequently remain in the neighbouring sign, blending the two.
Mars is the traditional ruler and Pluto the modern one. Mars supplies drive, appetite and the willingness to go straight at a thing. Pluto supplies the interest in what is buried, power, secrecy, the machinery under the floorboards. A Scorpio does not want the summary. They want to know who benefits.
The fixed modality is the part most descriptions skip. Fixed signs hold, and Scorpio holds emotional position too. This is the sign that feels something in March and is still feeling it, undiluted, in November. That capacity is the source of both the loyalty and the trouble.
Watchful, self-contained, and less relaxed than he appears. The Scorpio man gives away little while taking in a great deal, which people mistake for indifference. He is the quietest person at the table and the one who remembers what everyone said.
He is slow to trust and abrupt once trust breaks. The way in is consistency rather than charm, showing up when you said you would, for longer than seems necessary. Hurry him and he goes quiet, and stays quiet.
Composed on the surface, entirely certain underneath. The Scorpio woman knows what she thinks of you within ten minutes and will not tell you for months. She is comfortable with silence and good at spotting a performance.
What she cannot tolerate is being handled, the softened truth, the reassurance offered instead of the fact. A partner who protects her from information will find the concealment, not the information, is what she cannot forgive.
Scorpio does not do casual well, even when attempting it sincerely. The sign attaches at depth or not at all; the middle setting most people use for dating is not available.
What they want is somewhere to put the intensity, a person who will not be alarmed by it. Given that, Scorpio is among the most committed partners in the zodiac. The refusal to forget is real, but be precise: a Scorpio who has not forgiven will not act as though they have. That is not vengeance. It is a refusal to perform a feeling they do not have.
Scorpio works best where the problem is real and the stakes are visible. Crisis suits them. Bureaucratic calm does not, and a bored Scorpio starts investigating the organisation instead of doing the job.
The signature strength is stamina on one problem, still going after everyone else has declared it unsolvable. The signature weakness is politics: Scorpio sees the power dynamics clearly and cannot resist engaging, which makes opponents of colleagues faster than the work requires. They also concede authority badly, and a Scorpio who does not respect a manager will not pretend otherwise.
Fields that suit them: research, surgery, psychology, investigation, forensics, finance, intelligence work, anything requiring discretion or a strong stomach.
Scorpius is one of the few constellations that genuinely looks like its namesake. The claws, the long body and the sharply curved tail are all plainly there, no imaginative effort required, which is more than can be said for most of the zodiac.
Its brightest star is Antares, a red supergiant roughly 550 light years away and some 700 times the diameter of our sun. The name means "rival of Mars", anti-Ares, because its red is close enough to the planet's that the two get mistaken for each other in the sky.
The constellation sits in a dense stretch of the Milky Way, so the field around it is thick with stars and clusters. One curiosity: the sun passes through Scorpius for only about a week, the shortest transit of any zodiac constellation. Best viewed in summer from the northern hemisphere, low on the southern horizon.
Topaz is the stone most associated with Scorpio, particularly in its golden and imperial shades. Obsidian appears on modern lists and suits the sign better than anything else, volcanic glass, formed fast under heat, black enough to use as a mirror. Citrine is the alternative November stone.
Scorpio's colours are deep red and maroon from Mars, and black from Pluto. As one deep red stone against oxidised silver, it is the most striking palette in the zodiac.
Very few casual careers on that list. Almost every name went further into one subject than was comfortable, and then stayed there.
If you are buying for a Scorpio, or you are one, the glyph with its arrowed tail and the curve of the constellation both make striking pendants, and deep red stones sit beautifully against darkened silver. See our zodiac necklace collection for the sign as a constellation, a glyph and an engraved charm.
