Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac and the first one that stays put. Aries begins things; Taurus is what happens once the excitement wears off and somebody has to build the thing. It is both the first earth sign and the first fixed sign, the zodiac's capacity for holding still is invented here.
The symbol is a bull, and it is the only zodiac animal shown doing nothing. The ram charges, the lion presides, the scorpion is mid-strike. The bull is grazing. That is the sign in one image: force at rest, with no interest in proving itself.
Taurus runs from April 20 to May 20. If your birthday falls on either edge, the boundary can shift by a day depending on the year and your birth time, the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same moment annually.
People born close to either edge often recognise themselves in both signs, and there is a real reason for that: the planets sitting either side of your sun frequently remain in the neighbouring sign, blending the two.
Venus rules Taurus, and Venus is the planet of value, beauty, pleasure, money, what a thing is worth. Venus also rules Libra, but there it is social: harmony, the space between people. In Taurus it is physical. It lives in texture and weight, and it is frankly interested in ownership. A Taurus does not admire a beautiful object from a distance. They pick it up.
Fixed earth explains the rest. Earth asks what something costs and how long it lasts; fixed refuses to move. The result takes a long time to form an opinion and then treats it as load-bearing. Taurus is not slow. Taurus is unhurried, and the distinction is lost on anyone who has tried to rush one.
Calm, physical and harder to move than he looks. The Taurus man is usually the one who has said least and whose opinion everyone asks for anyway. Particular about food, and attached to a few objects he will never replace.
He courts slowly and without strategy. What he offers is not intensity but continuity, the same man, at the same standard, indefinitely. Push him toward a decision he has not finished making and he will not argue. He will stop moving.
Warm, grounded and quietly immovable. The Taurus woman tends to have taste arrived at slowly, a home that feels better than other people's for reasons hard to itemise, and a fixed sense of what she will not put up with.
She is generous with comfort and stingy with access. Getting close takes time, and the time is not a test, it is how long her judgement takes. Betray it afterwards and there is no scene, no second conversation and no way back.
Taurus is looking for something permanent and is honest about it. From the start they are assessing whether this could become a life, and if the answer is no, they often stay too long anyway, because leaving is effort.
What they offer is concrete. Not declarations but meals, warmth, the same person on a Tuesday as on a good day. The Taurean love language is maintenance, easy to undervalue until it stops. The failure mode is that same trait inverted: security curdles into possessiveness.
Taurus is the colleague who is still there. Rarely the fastest promoted, never the loudest in the meeting, but holding the institutional memory five years on while the quick starters have moved twice.
The signature strength is finishing: the last ten per cent everyone else abandons once the interesting problem is solved. The signature weakness is the pivot. When a project needs killing, a Taurus keeps improving it, because sunk effort feels like an argument.
Fields that suit them: banking, property, architecture, food and agriculture, luxury goods, gemmology and jewellery, and, because Taurus traditionally rules the throat, singing and voice work.
Taurus is one of the most spectacular constellations in the sky and among the oldest recognised anywhere. Its bull may appear in the Lascaux cave paintings, beside a cluster of dots some read as the Pleiades. Either way it was long established by the Bronze Age, when the spring equinox fell inside it.
The brightest star is Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri), a red giant roughly 65 light years away, burning orange exactly where the bull's eye should be. It looks like the brightest member of the Hyades, the V-shaped cluster forming the bull's face. It is not. It simply lies on the same line of sight, far nearer than the cluster behind it.
Above the shoulder sit the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters: the one thing in the night sky people notice without being told to look. Taurus also holds the Crab Nebula, wreckage of a supernova recorded in 1054, bright enough then to be seen in daylight. Best viewed in winter from the northern hemisphere, high overhead.
Emerald is the stone most associated with Taurus, and it fits for a reason the trade rarely spells out. Emeralds are almost always included, the fractures are so universal they are called the jardin, the garden: and the market accepts in emerald what it would reject in any other stone. Value that need not be flawless is a very Taurean idea. Rose quartz and sapphire appear on modern lists too.
The Taurean colours are green and soft pink, both tied to Venus. Both sit well against yellow gold, which is what most Taureans reach for anyway.
A list built on duration rather than flash: almost nobody on it arrived quickly, and almost nobody on it left.
If you are buying for a Taurus, or you are one, the horns and the Pleiades both translate well into pendant form, and emerald green against yellow gold is an old and reliable pairing. Taurus rules the neck, which makes a necklace the least arbitrary gift you can give one. See our zodiac necklace collection for the sign as a constellation, a glyph and an engraved charm.
